Our Family's top tips for visiting Blue Ridge, Georgia

While Blue Ridge is an enchanting mountain town, keep in mind that it is after all still small so, if you go during the summer months, there are a lot more stuff to do then if you go during winter.

However, being a Florida family we tend to prefer to vacation to cold areas during the winter and we cross our fingers to see snow but regardless of the season, Blue Ridge is always a great time.

The rental cabin

We have stayed in a few cabins in Blue Ridge and so far all of them were winners but very different than each other. We've had river and mountain view, pond view and even a cabin with a creek in the back.

Choosing the perfect cabin rental in Blue Ridge, Georgia, is a crucial part of ensuring your getaway is comfortable and memorable, especially if you are visiting during the winter season when winter storms can keep everyone locked inside for a day or more.

Here are a few tips for choosing the right cabin for you and you family:

  1. Define Your Priorities: Before you start browsing cabin listings, make a list of your priorities. Are you looking for a secluded retreat, a cabin with mountain views, or proximity to town? Knowing your preferences will help narrow down your options.

  2. Consider Cabin Size: Think about the size of the cabin you need based on the number of people in your group.

  3. Location, Location, Location: Decide whether you prefer a secluded mountain setting or a cabin closer to town for easy access to amenities.

  4. Amenities that Suit Your Style: Different cabins offer various amenities. Whether you want a hot tub with a mountain view, a fully equipped kitchen, or a fireplace for cozy evenings, make sure the cabin aligns with your desired level of comfort and luxury.

  5. Read Reviews: Take advantage of online platforms and read reviews from previous guests. This can provide insights into the cleanliness, maintenance, and overall experience of staying in a particular cabin.

  6. Check for Specials and Discounts: Keep an eye out for any specials, discounts, or package deals that cabin rental agencies may offer. This can help you get more value for your money. You can also book the cabin directly through the owner instead of a third party website such as Airbnb for better prices.

  7. Pet-Friendly Options: If you're traveling with pets, confirm whether the cabin is pet-friendly. Some cabins may have restrictions or additional fees for bringing your furry friends along.

  8. Booking Policies: Familiarize yourself with the booking policies, including cancellation fees and refund options. It's always good to be aware of the terms in case your plans change.

  9. Verify Accessibility: If anyone in your group has mobility issues, ensure that the cabin is accessible. Check for features like ramps, wide doorways, and accessible bathrooms.

  10. Customer Service Matters: Don't hesitate to reach out to the cabin rental agency with any questions or concerns. A responsive and helpful customer service team can make a significant difference in your overall experience.

Remember, the right cabin can enhance your Blue Ridge experience, so take your time, do your research, and choose the one that aligns with your vision of the perfect getaway.

Now, if you have but a short time to spend in town, here are our family's top things to do when visiting Blue Ridge.

Go on a walk

Depending on your cabin's location, a walk may be all you need to see a beautiful mountain scene. One of the cabins where we stayed had this very short walk to the scenic train tracks that runs right along side the river.

It was a beautiful and invigorating walk. The air is fresh and the mountains provide a gorgeous view.

Take a hike

With so many beautiful hiking trails within short distance, Blue Ridge makes the perfect place for hiking lovers. Whether your are a beginner or very proficient, there's a hiking trail for everyone.

If you have kids, I'd recommend Long Creek Falls, it's short and rather easy. We did the hike with all of our kids, including the two year old and it was a success! The water fall at the end of the trail is stunning and a great place for pictures.

Scenic Train ride

See the beauty of Blue Ridge and its mountains on a relaxing train ride. The Blue Ridge scenic railway offers a four hour, 26 mile train ride that departs from Downtown Blue Ridge and travels through the neighboring towns of McCaysville and Copperhill.

It's a great attraction for the entire family.

Go horse riding

Horse riding is another way to get a different view of the mountains in Blue Ridge but it's also relaxing and entertaining.

Now, keep in mind that many (if not all) establishments have changed the minimum age to ride to 10 years old, so if you have kids under the age 10, either call ahead to find out about age limits or make arrangements for the little ones.

Eat a local restaurant

Eating local is a must in Blue Ridge! One of our favorites in the area is the Toccoa Riverside Restaurant right off of Aska Road.

The restaurant also has a view of the Toccoa river with options for eating indoor or outdoor and the food is so good. Our go to is the smoked fish dip as an appetizer and the fried trout filet for an entree.

I also got my cranberry hibiscus at Echo in Ft. Myers over 13 years ago and I love that they still pop up in my yard. I've been trying to find the exact macros this plant provides to your diet but all I ever come up with is info on either the tea or the flowers. I use the leaves in my salads daily when its growing fresh in my yard. I do prefer the smaller leaves for salad. Any additional info you may have is appreciated!
